Poetry: Love Stays

By Monica C. Voskamp

Love,

Thank you for not

Having a price tag.

Thank you for not

Putting conditions on me.

Love, thank you

For reaching out

And hugging me

Right here, right now.

No matter how weird I looked

You never saw me like that

You stayed

When others walked out

God, you stayed.

Love, I’m only just seeing  you now

I’ve been searching for so long

Crying out bitter tears.

I had almost given up

A couple times.

Yet you illuminated

In a few unexpected places

Not the likely ones, but the best

Those people in my life have

The scent of  You.

Love, thank you

For staying with me

I know I’m saying that a lot.

But I needed you,

And you’re the one

Who chose to stay.

You stayed

In years of dark

In rooms of shame

In unseen abuse

Love you’re the one

Who stayed.

You still loved me

You didn’t leave

And I’m awed

Grateful and relieved.

Love, thank you

For being my true and steady.

For always making a point

To let me know

I’m not alone.

You’re still here with me.

Because that’s what you do,

Love always stays

Always hope. Always believe. Always love. 💞
